Priceless, also known as Hors de prix in French, is a French (with English subtitles) romantic comedy about a gold digger, Iréne (Audrey Tautou), who warms up to a young man named Jean (Gad Elmaleh) whom she believes is rich. Despite being well dressed and well-mannered, Jean is just a hotel bartender. After a night of drinks things warm up between the two, and the two share a night of romance. The following day, after spending all of Jean’s money, Iréne finds out that Jean is really just a bartender without a penny to his name. Feeling betrayed and used, Iréne demands that Jean never speak to her again.
Jean realizes that he has fallen in love with Iréne, and in an attempt to maintain a friendly relationship with her, Jean decides to become a male gold digger himself by dating an older rich widow. Iréne and Jean go through a cycle of comparing the goods they have received from their significantly older rich partners and end up falling in love along the way. The two eventually realize that a life without riches is better than a life apart from each other.
Although I really do not like romance movies I must say that I love this movie. As always, Audrey Tautou performs marvelously in this film, and Gad Elmaleh plays his gold digging role quite well. To see a man play a gold digger is hilarious, and was perfectly executed in this film. The best part about this quirky flick is that it can be streamed instantly on Netflix. If you’re not one for foreign subtitled films then maybe this isn’t for you, otherwise this movie is a must see, especially for Audrey Tautou fans.
